Joy Lawn

Joy Lawn is a freelance reviewer and columnist for The Weekend Australian (YA literature) and Books+Publishing (poetry; children’s and YA lit). She also writes about children’s books for Australian Book Review and Magpies magazine and blogs about literary and other fiction.

She has been the chair of the judging panel of the children’s literature category of the Qld Literary Awards since 2010, judges the Aurealis speculative fiction awards and was a 2009-2010 judge for the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Her teacher notes about the CBCA shortlist, Inside the Shortlist have been used by teacher librarians and teachers around Australia. These are now published in The Literature Base.

Joy is an inspirational and sought after speaker with an in-depth knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and literary fiction. Formerly a teacher, Joy has wide experience in presenting at conferences and advising TLs, teachers, librarians, academics, parents and others on children’s and YA literature.

With an MA in Children’s Literature and Literacy, Joy continues to read children’s and other literature avidly. She writes teacher notes for professional organisations and chairs author sessions at the Brisbane and Sydney Writers Festivals.

Fascinated by ideas and images and how authors and illustrators express these with truth and originality, Joy’s vision is to see CYA literature further recognised in the wider community.
