Joy Lawn

Joy Lawn is a current judge of the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards (Australia), chair of the Patricia Wrightson (children’s literature) judging panel of the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and judge of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Older Readers category. She has also chaired the children’s judging panel of the Queensland Literary Awards and judged the IBBY Honour (Australia) and Aurealis Awards.

Joy writes the young adult literature column for The Weekend Australian andher reviews and interviews have also appeared in Australian Book Review, SMH/The Age, Magpies magazine, ALEA publications and Books+Publishing. She writes teacher notes for National Literacy & Numeracy Week (ALEA/AATE), Reading Australia (ALEA) and other professional organisations.  Joy has taught a children’s/YA literature course at the University of Southern Queensland and been a literature consultant for independent bookstores.

Formerly a teacher, Joy is an experienced presenter at state, national and international conferences advising teachers, librarians and academics on literature. She blogs about children’s and young adult literature and literary fiction at Boomerang Books and some of her favourite times of the year are spent chairing sessions at the Sydney and Brisbane Writers’ Festivals. She has an MA in Children’s Literature and Literacy.

Fascinated by ideas and images and how authors and illustrators express these with truth and originality, Joy’s vision is to see quality CYA literature further recognised in the wider community.
